Identifying Voice Disorders
I join Dr. Shiying Hey from the Union of European Phoniatricians for a podcast conversation about identifying voice disorders.
I discuss my background in laryngology, which began in high school with a fascination for sound and physics. Both endoscopic examinations and listening to a patient's voice to diagnose voice disorders are especially important. I review a three-part approach to diagnosing voice problems: listening to the patient's history, examining the voice, and using an endoscope to visualize the vocal cords. We discuss compensatory behaviors and lifestyle changes, such as avoiding coffee and alcohol, to maintain vocal health. We mention my 2012 book, "Why is there a frog in my throat?" and this website, voicedoctor.net.
