Respiratory findings

Printer-friendly version

Ordinarily there should be no sound produced during respiration. This can be tested separately for a detailed evaluation. Also, sounds may be noted during other portions of the examination. For example, at the end of maximum phonation time testing the individual will usually take a deep inspiration.

I make note of any inappropriate sound produced during:

  • quiet respiration and
  • deep respiration,
  • forced respiration.

I note when it occurs - during:

  • inspiration,
  • expiration or
  • both inspiration & expiration.

 I note the quality:

  • white noise,
  • squeak.
  • low pitched.
