At 3 am we awoke and silently packed up camp. We were remarkably efficeint and hit the trail at precisely 4:00. For the first hour, we looked like a uniform line of fireflies bouncing up and down. Eventually, we completed teh 4 1/2 mile hike to the trail head and were treated to a gorgeous sunrise on our final day. We met up with the van and were driven to the starting point of our final challenge. With little sleep (and some members of our group still digesting the previous night's dinner of beans, rice, and split pea soup) we all completed the 8 mile run. The rest of the day consisted of winding down the course. We cleaned our gear and cleaned our bodies. we set up camp for the last time. And most importantly, we relaxed, talked, laughed, and enjoyed each other's company.

Comments by James Early to rise for a nighttime hike led to a red sapphire sunrise as we met the van to take us out of the backcountry. The run was interesting as I met younger outward bounders who hiked our journey in reverse and we compared notes. Cleanup of equipment and ourselves felt like a completion of the journey. Quantities of food were in abundance. Debriefing led to a satisfaction of a journey well done and prayer flags flap in the breeze in Mazama, Washington. |
