After an intubation that saved his life, this patient developed trouble breathing weeks later. He had a tracheostomy placed and was told to wait a year as the vocal cords were paralyzed and they might start moving again. See diagnosis and another discussion about bilateral paralysis. Paralysis usually starts out with the vocal cords far apart, not together. |

This is the same patient as above, but is a close up view of the vocal cords from below (through the tracheostomy). There is scar tissue between the vocal processes bridging between the vocal cords. The scar tissue is keeping them from opening, not a paralysis. |
